Hey all,
Today is Book Release Day! Finally.
I just checked my email to see when Broadleaf first reached out and it was just about 18 months ago to the day. Honestly, I thought it was many more years ago, but I guess time drags on when you’re having fun.
I am so grateful for all of the ways that so many of you have walked with me through the project: from its initial conception, to its initial rejection, to its championing, to its completion, and now to its release.
It has been a ride.
If you preordered a copy of the book*, it would be awesome of you could post a picture sometime on Tuesday, March 5th so we can really blow out launch day! And if you are in the area, stop by the Book Release Party on Tuesday night in JTown in San Francisco.
If you have yet to grab a copy, we are encouraging folks to buy and review it on Bookshop and also rate and review on Amazon and Goodreads. Of course, if you buy multiple copies and help the Amazon algorithm gremlins drop my title into the sea of different Christian perspectives, that would not be hated.
If you have In the meantime, you can see the reel I just created with the initial endorsements and/or follow me on Instagram for all of the release day activities.
Finally, in gratitude for everyone who helped get this monstrosity of love across the finish line, below is the Acknowledgments section from the book.
People. The people and communities who have helped to shape and form my theological perspectives and political personality are too numerous to name. From church sanctuary to soccer sideline to school communities, I am grateful for all of those who have poured their wisdom, courage, challenge, and comfort into my particular journey of faith and relationship to God.
Places. For all of the places where I found myself writing, editing, and planting my face on the tabletop when the words would not come: First and foremost for this book, Spectra Coffee in San Jose, where the staff are lovely, the coffee tasty, and the culinary magicians in the kitchen conjure up the best avocado toast ever; Happy Girl Kitchen in Pacific Grove, where, again, the avocado toast is scrumptious and they make the best bread; Captain Stokers in Monterey, where the avocado bowl has been mastered (yes, I know, I have an avocado problem); Java Café in Maui, where I spent many early morning vacation hours writing, fueled by iced coffee, smoked salmon bagels, and time away from those pesky “tourists”; Pioneer Café in the Yucca Valley, where the lox bagel is amazing; multiple Starbucks, where I get my “iced chocolate almond milk shaken espresso with an extra shot of malt” comfort beverage; Philz Coffee in general, with a special shoutout to the Middlefield location in Palo Alto; Obet & Del’s in Los Angeles, where the Filipino iced coffee is masarap; and all of the other random cafés, coffee shops, and tea houses around the country where I may have parked for an hour or six. These “third spaces” in society are a balm to the wounds of worldly division, and I am grateful for all of those who fill this vital role.
Pups. And yes, as always, my puppers, Vespa the English Bull Terrier and Bernie the Beagador. While Bernie shows his love through his consistent grumpy old man vibes, Vespa helped to nurse me through my Covid recovery and subsequent long Covid terribleness. She was always willing to stare at my incessant and annoying Instagram reel-making in exchange for a good snuggle on the couch or a bully stick. I’m not sure how many more books Vespa will help to write, but it’s safe to say that pup has been a balm to my spirit and soul.
Valerie: the depth of gratitude that I have for my editor is immeasurable. She championed this project from the beginning, quickly grasped my voice and intentions, pushed and prodded me with compassion, eased my tender author anxieties more than once, and helped to bring clarity to this book beyond what I could have imagined. Thank you, Valerie!
Lastly, much love to my spouse, Robin, and my three children, Annie, Abby, and Ev, for their patience, support, and love
